We have completed a new 151kW commercial solar PV installation for Hannon Transport at its Lusk facility in Co. Dublin, alongside four 22kW AC EV chargers.
The new system has been designed around the energy demands of this busy logistics facility and is expected to generate around 20% of the site’s electricity requirements. By producing more of its electricity on-site, Hannon can reduce the amount of energy it needs to purchase from the grid, with the investment projected to achieve payback in just four to five years.
This is the third solar project we has delivered for the Hannon group, following previous installations at Hannon Transport’s headquarters in Aghalee and Hannon Steel at Nutts Corner.
Why does commercial solar make sense for logistics and distribution businesses?
Logistics and distribution facilities can have significant electricity demands throughout the working day, from offices and warehouse operations to refrigeration, equipment and an increasing requirement for EV charging.
This makes solar particularly well suited to the sector. Electricity generated from solar panels during daylight hours can be used directly across the site, reducing the amount of electricity that needs to be purchased from the grid.
At Hannon’s Lusk facility, the 151kW solar PV system is expected to provide approximately 20% of the site’s overall electricity usage.
For businesses considering commercial solar in Dublin or elsewhere in the Republic of Ireland, the important part is designing the system around how the site actually consumes electricity. At Encom, we assess energy usage, available roof space and future requirements before designing a commercial system, rather than simply installing the maximum amount of solar a roof can accommodate.
What is the payback period for commercial solar in Ireland?
Return on investment is understandably one of the first questions businesses ask when considering solar.
For Hannon Transport’s Lusk installation, the projected payback period is approximately four to five years. After that point, the system can continue generating electricity and reducing the site’s reliance on grid energy for many years to come.
The exact payback for any commercial solar installation will vary depending on factors including the size of the system, electricity consumption, the amount of solar energy used directly on-site, electricity prices and any grant support available.
That is why we model each commercial project individually, giving businesses a clearer picture of expected generation, savings and payback before they make an investment.
Can businesses in Ireland get a grant for commercial solar panels?
Grant support can make the business case for commercial solar even stronger.
Hannon Transport applied for support through the SEAI Non-Domestic Microgen Grant, with the Encom team helping to guide them through the process as part of the wider project.
For businesses considering solar PV in the Republic of Ireland, understanding what support may be available should form part of the early planning process. Our team can help businesses understand the options available and factor eligible support into the overall solar proposal.
Why combine commercial solar with EV charging?
The Hannon project goes beyond solar generation, with four 22kW AC EV chargers installed alongside the new 151kW system.
For logistics businesses and other companies planning for greater use of electric vehicles, looking at solar and EV charging together makes sense.
Generating electricity on-site can help support a business’s wider transition towards electrification, while installing the charging infrastructure now gives the site greater flexibility as its vehicle requirements change.
Commercial solar, battery storage and EV charging do not have to be treated as separate investments. They can form part of a wider energy strategy designed around how a business operates today and where its energy requirements are heading.
Encom’s third solar project with Hannon
The Lusk installation continues an established relationship between Encom Energy and the Hannon group.
Our team previously delivered a 111kWp solar PV system at Hannon Transport’s headquarters in Aghalee, Northern Ireland. We have also completed a 115kW solar installation at Hannon Steel’s facility at Nutts Corner.
Now, with the completion of the 151kW system at Lusk, Encom has delivered commercial solar projects for the group on both sides of the border.
Repeat projects like these also allow businesses with multiple locations to take a longer-term approach to energy, assessing each site individually and identifying where solar, battery storage and EV charging can deliver the strongest return.
Looking for commercial solar panels in Dublin or across Ireland?
If your business is considering commercial solar in Dublin or elsewhere in the Republic of Ireland, the starting point should be understanding how and when your site uses electricity.
At Encom Energy, we design and install commercial solar PV, battery storage and EV charging systems for businesses across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Our commercial team can assess your electricity consumption, site requirements and future energy plans before designing a system around where the biggest savings can be made.
Whether you operate a logistics facility, warehouse, manufacturing site, food production business or another high-energy-use operation, we can provide clear projections for system performance, potential savings and expected payback before work begins.
